road bike tour to the southern Sacred Valley

The Tour

Tasting The Road presents one of the few road bike tours in the Cusco area. Our private transportation and safety car will pick us up from the hotel in the morning. The first stop is a typical breakfast with a fresh juice made of seasonal fruits at Mercado Wanchaq, one of the bigger local markets. After the safety briefing, we start our ride and leave the city center. Once outside Cusco, we enjoy pedaling quieter country roads, breathing the pure air, with the wonderful landscape catching our eyes. The road is mainly flat, but we are riding at more than 3000 m.a.s.l., so take it easy and have fun. Passing by Laguna Huacarpay, villages and agricultural areas, we get to the town of Andahuaylillas. This place is famous because it has one of Peru’s most beautiful chapels, San Pedro de Andahuaylillas. Due to the way it was built and the amazing decoration and paintings inside, it is also called the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas”. Taking a guided tour through the church, we learn more about this wonderful place. After taking pictures, a snack and some water, we get on the bikes again and start our way back. Under the warm Andean afternoon sun, we visit a town called Tipon, well-known as an archeological site in the mountains and for its typical gastronomy, the main dish being “cuy” (guinea pig). Time for lunch, some drinks and a refreshing beer if you like. The last part of our ride gets us back to the outer districts of Cusco. We get off the bikes and into our private car to avoid the heavy inner city rush hour traffic. Back at the hotel, we get our welldeserved rest after a delicious taste of the South Valley of Cusco!

Level of difficulty: beginners and higher, road bike experience required

Duration: full day tour (approx. 9 ½ hours), 70 km on bike, mainly flat, two easy climbs

Itinerary

07:30 am – pick up guests

08:30 am – breakfast at local market

09:20 am – leaving Cusco with bikes

12:00 pm – arrival to town, visit Chapel of Andahuaylillas

12:40 pm – continue bike ride

01:40 pm – arrival in Tipon, typical Peruvian lunch

02:40 pm – start bike ride back to Cusco

04:00 pm – arrival San Jeronimo, back on private transportation

05:00 pm – drop off guests in hotel
