Peruvian Salt

our classic mountain bike tour to Moray and Maras

The Tour

This amazing Tasting The Road adventure begins early in the morning, going to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. After a nice breakfast, our private transportation picks us up, with the bikes ready and loaded on the roof. Getting comfortable in the car, we leave the city behind us and catch a first glimpse of the Andean mountains. The starting point is about 5 km before Chinchero, this area is well known for the amazing textiles and the technique the local people use for weaving traditional Peruvian clothes. We begin the bike tour after our safety briefing. First we bike through agricultural areas and typical small Andean villages. Then we descent further into the Sacred Valley, with the mighty snow mountains surrounding the area like big guardians. Our first stop is the Ttiobamba Church. From there, we go down a bit more with our bikes until we get to the main road, where we meet our transport and take a snack break. We move on with our car to Moray, the circular agricultural laboratory of the Incas. Here we enjoy a guided visit of the archeological site. Then we get back on our bikes and ride until the entrance of Maras town. We cross this picturesque country town with its typical houses and farms, enjoying the breathtaking views on the mountains. After some pictures, we go on a nice single track, which leads us to Salineras de Maras (the salt pads of Maras), a wonderful place in the mountains where the local people built these pads in order to collect the salt provided by the mountain waters. Its product is the famous pink salt of Maras. There’s a typical lunch waiting for us in a local restaurant. Then we visit the entire area, talk with the people and take pictures. We continue on our bike track, cross the Urubamba River and finish at the bridge of Pichingoto, situated in the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We load the bikes and our gear, enjoy a well-deserved beer to celebrate the successful finish of our tour, and drive back to Cusco. A delicious salty taste of the road in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Cheers!!
